There are many things that make us happy in this world. We are happy when we pass an exam, when we achieve a degree, buy a new car, house, property, get married to the person you love, being parents, grandparents, watching films, reading books and receiving knowledge, meeting friends and partying, these are all very good things and we ought to be happy with all these things but does this happiness last long? Let us see what true happiness is according to the word of God is.
When we read Psalm 1 we can learn how to be happy in a godly way. This Psalm starts like this “Happy is the man………..” and some conditions for happiness.
It tells us not to walk in the counsel of the ungodly. Why does the bible warn us not to go for counsel to the ungodly? Because these people are corrupted and they use crooked means to get their jobs done. That is why the Lord told the Israelite’s not have anything to do with the ungodly, they can be soothsayers (Deut 18”10-14), mediums (1 Sam 28:3-2, we know what happened to Saul by seeking the assistance of a medium, he was utterly defeated. Today we might not go to the above people as christians, but we go to different professionals, that are in church but not walking in a godly manner.
The scripture says not to stand in the paths of sinners, when we try to mingle in with people who don’t fear God they take us from the path of righteousness and lead us on a path that will eventually disobey God. If we look at the life of Rehoboam, he hearkened to the voice of the sinners and stood with them and lost his monarchy.
the scripture continues… sits in the seat of the Scornful, who are the scornful? People who talk about others running them down, slandering, gossiping, when we associate them, their ungodly nature touches our lives, and we tend to be like them.
Read John 4 we read about a woman who was scorned. She lived with the ungodly, stood with the sinners, who sat in the seat of the Scornful, and she tried to find happiness in many ways. Instead of happiness day by day she became unhappy, rejected, frustrated and miserable, but when she met Jesus, she found true happiness and her delight became the law of the Lord, she meditated on His Word day and night, and she became a tree of life. We read that she brought a whole village to the Saviour that is because she found the true happiness she was seeking year after year, when she found it she went to the people who did not know true happiness and she released her joy or happiness to everyone and brought them to a godly path. A village that was to be like chaff and blown in the wind, were brought to real happiness. Because true happiness was found by her, she valued it, it could not be contained, it was bursting forth and she released it to her village.
Since you found Jesus, have you found true happiness, is it bubbling, is it uncontainable is it contagious? Or are you finding happiness in the wrong places, comfort in the wrong sources, when you face trials and temptations where do you go for counsel? Think and re-evaluate your life.
And if it is not so, keep on reading the word of God, meditate it day and night, find some godly friends, get counsel from the right people. You will truly find happiness that you are longing for and cannot be taken from you at all.
