When do we use this phrase “watch out”? I believe when we are in danger, in using wrong words, or when someone is intending to hurt us. Sometimes in friendships and relationships, when we know someone we love and care for may get hurt, we advise the person concerned using the words watch out or be careful. I use this phrase when I see my family or people I care and are concerned for about to fall into trouble.
We know our mouth is a very powerful tool, which can bless or curse, encourage or discourage, build or destroy our lives and those around us. I believe when God created our face in His wisdom, He was very careful to create one mouth, because the infinite God knew what damage we would have caused to ourselves and His Kingdom.
Let us look at what things God wants us to do with our Mouth.
He wants us to bless Him with our mouths. The first thing God did when He created man, God used His mouth to bless them. (Gen 1:28; 5:2). As God’s children the first thing we should do bless the Lord for the new day, for life and breath, for our families, friends, leaders of the body of Christ, leaders of the nation etc…that he has given us. (Ps 103). We pray a lot but we forget to bless praise and worship Him, I believe this should be the primary goal of using our mouths. What are you doing with your mouth as you open your eyes from your sleep?
He wanted us to have authority and speak to situations. When God created mankind He gave them authority over everything on earth (Gen 1:28) Every Christian says that we have authority, but how many of us use our mouth to release that authority into the circumstances we face in our day to day life. Jesus taught with Authority (Matt 7:28-29) Jesus used Hi Authority over sickness, nature, demons, Matt 8:14-17; Mk 1:21-28; 5:1-43; Lu 9:37-42; Matt 21:18-19; Mk 11:12-14; Matt 8:23-27: Mk 4:35-41; Lu 8:22-25). What are you doing as a child of God?
God wants us to use our mouth to bless and pray for ourselves and others. We must never use our mouths to curse, gossip, slander, (Num 22:18-20) but to use our mouths for other people’s benefit, even though we are not benefitted by them.(Luke 6:38; Rom 12:14; 1Co 4:12;). Hezekiah prayed for the victory of Israel and his life to be extended and the whole Israel was blessed (Isa 37: 8-20, 38: 1-22) Hannah prayed for a personal need, the whole Israel was blessed with her son (1Sam Chap 1-16). Solomon prayed for wisdom and the nation was blessed (1kgs 3:1-15). David prayed for guidance in war generations were blessed. Jesus prayed and went to the cross and the entire world is resting in His loving arms out of the enemy (Matt 26: 36-39). What are we praying for?
God wants us to build nations cities and generations with our mouths. When God called Jeremiah, He said “I give you power to build and plant” (Je 1:10). Every time we prophesy about God’s plan, we are building our nations cities and generations. Look how the prophets prophesied to the nation of Israel (Isa 30;18-26; Je 29:11-14; 33:6-11;Eze 28:25-26; 36:8-15; 24-30). These prophets saw wickedness doom and destruction in the nation but they prophesied the building of their nation, city and generations, they saw the results. What are you speaking about your nation, city, and generation?
God wants us to use our mouth to encourage one another. As we look at the life of Jesus and His disciples, they encouraged and built lives (Jn 1:47-51; Matt 16:13-19; 19:13-15; Mk 11:22-24; Lk 23:42-43; Acts 3:38-39;Eph 4:1-6; 5:1-21; Php 2:1=18; Col 3:12-19; 1Tim 1:18; 2Tim:1-2). Sometimes our parents, leaders, pastors, and friends who care for us may correct us through rebuke and chastisement, listen carefully if it’s to encourage or discourage us. I thank God for people really care for me and correct me through rebuke and criticism because they build by character, day by day and help me mature in Christ. Do you recall the day you last encouraged someone to do what is right?
Can we say like the Psalmist “I have purposed that my mouth shall not transgress”(Ps 17:3). Don’t use your mouth to grumble, complain, and murmur against God. Ask God to help you to do the following:
- That the words of your mouth may be acceptable unto Him. (Psalm 19:14)
- That your mouth will speak righteousness and justice (Ps 37:30)
- That you may have a new song for Him (Ps 40:3).
- That your mouth may be filled with praise (Ps 70:8)
- That His word will be sweet in your mouth (Ps 119:103)
- That He may keep a guard on your mouth (Ps 141:3).
- That you may not be snared by the words of your mouth (Pr 2:6).
- That your mouth will be a well of life (Pr 10:11, 18:4).
- That your mouth will speak wisdom (Pro 10:31).
- That corrupt communication may not come out of your mouth.
Remember Matthew 12:34 says, that we have to give an account of every vain word or unproductive word we speak. So watch your mouth.
